This engine family has become the workhorse of general aviation, powering numerous aircraft models including the Piper PA-46, Cessna 182 and 206, Grob G 120, Robinson R44 helicopter, and Tecnam P2012. Its widespread adoption speaks volumes about its performance and durability in diverse flight conditions.

The IO-540's engineering excellence extends to specialized applications. The AEIO-540 variant, enhanced for aerobatic performance, boosts output from 260 to 300 horsepower. This increased power makes it ideal for high-performance aerobatic aircraft like the Extra 300, CAP 232, and Zivko Edge 540, enabling pilots to execute complex aerial maneuvers with precision.

The museum's specific exhibit, bearing serial number 32R-8013064, represents both the standard aviation applications and the specialized adaptations of this engine family. Its transition from active service to museum display marks a new chapter in its story.
